Zweisimmen (in the regional Alemannic variety Zwüsimme [ ˈt͡svʏsɪmːə ]) is a political municipality in the Obersimmental-Saanen administrative district in the canton of Bern and is located in the Bernese Oberland .

geography

Historic aerial photo by Werner Friedli from 1957

The Grosse Simme and the Kleine Simme flow together in the municipality , hence the name. The region around Zweisimmen in the Simmental is bordered by mountains: in the north by the steeply jagged limestone reefs of the Stockhorn - Gantrisch - Gastlosen chain, in the south by the glaciated main ridge of the Bernese Alps , from which the most striking figures of the Wildstrubel , Wildhorn and Diablerets massif protrude.

The community consists of the districts Zweisimmen , Blankenburg , Mannried , Grubenwald and the scattered settlements of Oeschseite and Reichenstein .

history

The settlements of Zweisimmen, Grubenwald and Betelried emerged around 850. The Blankenburg Castle is first mentioned in 1325.

The first school was established in 1608. The Simmentalstrasse was built between 1816 and 1821 and was expanded to Saanen until 1828 . On St. Nicholas Day in 1862 a village fire devastated Zweisimmen, burning half of the houses. After the telegraph office in 1868, electric light was introduced in 1900. From 1902 to 1905 the railway connections to Montreux were built . In the years 1932–1936 the Simmentalstrasse was paved and expanded. With the winter 1934, the ski tourism began in Zweisimmen and from 1936 decreed the skiers about a particular means of transport for winter sports, as Funi (short for Funiculaire ) called sled cable car . As with a funicular, two sledges went up and down in opposite directions, but not on rails, but on snow. After the construction of the Zweisimmen-Rinderberg gondola in 1957, it was the longest of its kind in Europe until the 1970s. It was completely renovated in 1987.

politics

The voting shares of the parties in the 2015 National Council election were: SVP 54.1%, BDP 12.7%, SP 8.7%, FDP 8.2%, glp 7.6%, GPS 2.9%, EDU 2.6 %, EVP 1.2%, CVP 0.6%.

economy

Service, trade, agriculture and tourism are the most important pillars of the community.

  • six hotels with 197 beds
  • eleven group houses with 600 beds
  • two campsites with 200 places
  • 1700 jobs in services, tourism, trade and agriculture
  • Positive commuter balance
  • The shortest commutes to work in Switzerland

tourism

The region is suitable for hikes, alpine activities and winter sports. In winter there are 200 km of slopes with 57 mountain railways, in summer 300 km of hiking trails. Many other activities are available in the immediate vicinity: pump track, indoor and outdoor pools, ice rinks, museums, golf course, tennis courts, etc.

Healthcare

The Zweisimmen Hospital is located on site , a hospital with 24-hour emergency care. It belongs to the clinic network of the STS hospitals.

The Maternité Alpine birthing center is used to care for pregnant women or women giving birth .

traffic

Zweisimmen is well developed by road and rail, as well as with the Zweisimmen and Saanen airfields .

The community is the end point of the standard gauge railway line of the BLS von Spiez . The meter-gauge railway lines of the Montreux-Berner Oberland-Bahn (MOB) to Lenk and to Montreux on Lake Geneva begin in Zweisimmen . Between 2015 and 2018, BLS will invest CHF 58 million in renovating the station with a gauge change system. This means that travelers on the GoldenPassLine from Montreux to Interlaken will probably be able to travel directly from the end of 2019 without having to change trains.

The Simmental is open to private traffic. Road connections over the Jaunpass to the Friborg region, the Col des Mosses and Col du Pillon in the canton of Valais have been important crossings since the beginning of the settlement.

Attractions

  • The Reformed Church of St. Mary was built in the middle of the 15th century. The building is painted outside and inside with late Gothic frescoes that are related to Swabian painting (Strigel workshop) and were created in the years 1470–1500. The west facade is decorated with Christophorus, with the Annunciation to Mary and with George fighting the dragon. Inside there are scenes from the legend of Mary and the life of Jesus on the nave walls. The choir is painted with a row of apostles and an angel with a censer.
