The Montreux-Berner Oberland-Bahn , abbreviated MOB , French Chemin de fer Montreux Oberland bernois is a Swiss railway company. Today it is entered in the commercial register with the spelling Compagnie du Chemin de fer Montreux Oberland bernois SA and Montreux Berner Oberland Bahn AG , until 2010 the German spelling was Montreux-Berner Oberland-Bahn . It is both a railway company and a railway infrastructure company ; it essentially operates the meter-gauge Montreux – Lenk railway in the Simmental . The company was founded in the late 1890s with a view to building the line.

vehicles

Overview

The Montreux-Berner Oberland-Bahn procured a large number of four-axle railcars and two-axle trailer cars for the opening of continuous operations in 1905. Many trains required double traction due to the steep incline. However, the short two-axle vehicles did not offer particularly good driving comfort. From 1906 four-axle were dining cars of the Swiss dining car company used and the MOB replaced until the Great Depression in 1929, part of the two-axle vehicle with four-axle passenger cars. At around eleven and a half meters, the first deliveries were only slightly longer than the two-axle vehicles (9.34 m), the last delivery (1929) was 16.47 meters. With this rolling stock, especially the upholstered class, the aim was to offer well-to-do customers who stayed overnight in the then well-known tourist regions of Montreux and Gstaad, attractive transport options. The development reached its peak when the CIWL procured four Pullman cars for a "Golden Mountain Pullmann Express" (label on the car). They were used from 1931. When the six-axle baggage locomotives designed for this train arrived the following year, the luxury train was already history.

GDe 4/4 with Golden Pass Classic between Gstaad and Gruben

With the global economic crisis, the economic situation of the MOB deteriorated and investments and renovations had to be dispensed with. It was only when the Private Railway Aid Act came into force in the 1940s that new railcars and coaches could be procured. With the entry into force of the Railway Act , the situation improved noticeably and from 1962 the vehicle fleet could be systematically renewed. Finally, new concepts were designed and air-conditioned panorama cars were created, largely in the company's own workshop in Chernex . In order to save costs, bogies, underframes and other useful components of old cars were reused.

Since then, the MOB has established itself on the GoldenPassLine from Montreux via Gstaad , Zweisimmen and Interlaken to Lucerne with the brand names Panoramic Express, Super Panoramic Express, Crystal Panoramic Express, Golden Pass Panoramic and Golden Pass Classic (some of which have since disappeared) . The continuous marketing with a few uniformly gold-colored vehicles could not eliminate the lack of having to change trains in Zweisimmen. An idea of a three-rail track Zweisimmen – Spiez – Interlaken, pursued since the 1980s, could not be financed. The MOB researched in a different direction and was finally able to present the prototype of a re-trackable bogie for the panorama car. In April 2011, the federal government and the cantons involved agreed to finance the required gauge changing facilities in Zweisimmen. In a first phase, two-hour trains Montreux – Spiez are to form a connection between the long-distance routes Lausanne – Brig and Bern – Brig without changing trains, with individual trains going through to Interlaken.

Electric traction vehicles

Initially, the MOB was mainly based on four-axle railcars, the low power of which did not allow any noteworthy trailer load given the steep gradients. By 1924, four generations of a total of 30 railcars followed, each time with slightly increased power (numbers 1–3 132 kW, 4–22 and 1001–02 192 kW, and later for some cars 252 kW, 23–26 336 kW, 27–28 388 kW), which however often had to be used in double traction. In 1932, the MOB procured two six-axle baggage locomotives (2000 series, 738 kW) to transport the increasingly heavy cars, including dining cars and Pullman cars . When they were delivered, the economic crisis had caused a slump in tourism and the two locomotives were also useful in freight transport. They were ultimately used in front of heavy trains until 1996. The DZe 6/6 2001 was dismantled and an overhaul started, the parts then stored. In 2008 DZe 6/6 2002 was handed over to the Blonay – Chamby museum railway together with various spare parts from 2001.

Even during the Second World War, powerful light railcars came into operation (Series 3000, hourly output 440 kW, in contrast to the other French usage of the MOB as autorails instead of automotrices), which were first equipped with multiple controls for the MOB. This allowed the use of a double traction with only one engine driver. After a twenty-year break in procurement, four double railcars (Series 4000) with the same output (total 880 kW) were put into operation in 1968. After the experience with the light railcars, it was decided not to be able to use the cars individually. Around ten years later, another four railcars of the same power (5000 series, 448 kW) came into operation, this time again as a single railcar, but with a control car. These units were procured for suburban traffic from Montreux and the reopened Zweisimmen – Lenk line. From 1973 on, railcars were repeatedly acquired from other railways for local trains and shunting (Series 1000, second occupancy and numbers 36-38). It started with two, at that time still relatively modern, railcars from the discontinued Ticino Railways.

After the introduction of the panorama cars and the launch of the Panoramic Express, locomotives have now been procured. 1983 first luggage locomotives (Series 6000), whose continuous output (1000 kW) exceeded that of the double multiple units. The performance of the locomotives (Series 8000), which are closely related to the RhB Ge 4/4 III, was purchased eight years later. Two years later, four Stadler articulated multiple units (Series 7000) for suburban traffic went into operation in the Montreux / Vevey region, which were only co-financed by the canton of Vaud and therefore belong to MVR. In August 2012, 17 narrow-gauge multiple units were put out to tender together with the MBC , the Travys and the TPF . Stadler received the order and in 2016 delivered four two-part ABe 4/4 + Be 4/4 multiple units .

Thermal traction vehicles

The MOB had procured two three-axle steam locomotives from SLM as construction locomotives, which were hardly needed after completion of the construction work and were finally sold to Luxembourg in 1906 and 18. In 1941 a diesel tractor was purchased for the renewal of the catenary, but it was sold on in 1950. From 1971 onwards, various tractors and overhead power units were procured on the second-hand market. For heavy construction trains, two four-axle diesel locomotives built in France (numbers 2003 and 2004) were added to the vehicle fleet in 1976 and 1982, but thanks to their top speed of 80 km / h they occasionally also helped with passenger traffic.

Two-motor vehicles

The MOB ordered from Stadler 2015 three-axle electro-diesel locomotive Gem 2.2 from 2502 to 2504 for the construction services. They come from a joint order of nine vehicles, which also includes Transports Montreux-Vevey-Riviera (MVR), Transports Publics du Chablais (TPC), Freiburgische Verkehrsbetriebe (TPF) and Chemin de fer Nyon-Saint-Cergue-Morez (NStCM) ) involved.

Passenger cars

The passenger cars of the Montreux-Berner Oberland-Bahn can essentially be divided into five categories:

  1. short wooden box four-axle and two-axle vehicles from the early days (1900s)
  2. Wooden box four-axle vehicle (1910s to 1940s), some of which are very comfortable
  3. Car body in a light mixed design (1940s)
  4. Car body made of light metal of the standard design (from the 1960s)
  5. Panorama car (from the 1970s).

Of the passenger cars in categories 1 to 3, only two saloon cars are still in use at the MOB.

Short wooden box two-axle vehicles from the early days

In 1904/05, a total of 21 wooden box two-axle vehicles with a small wheel base (3.6 m) were procured from SIG for the expansion of rolling stock in connection with the network expansion. Four cars were pure upholstery class cars B 301–304, nine were mixed class BC 351–359, these two series had four windows. There were also eight five-string C 401–408. Between 1910 and 1913, the MOB extended the wheelbase of six cars to 5.3 meters. In 1914 and 1926 a total of ten cars were sold to other railways, eight of which were in the 1960s on the two narrow-gauge railways FLP (B2 13-18) and LT (B2 13-14) that started out from Lugano . Eleven cars remained, five of them with a short wheelbase. From 1964 to 1966 the MOB broke off nine cars and used the underframes to build the cement silo cars OB 881-888, which were broken off again from 1968 to 74.

Short wooden box four-axle vehicles from the early days

The first three four-axle vehicles (BC4 21-22 and 51) of the MOB were delivered by SIG in 1901 and were only 11.5 m long. Two had narrow windows, one was a summer carriage. After more cars were delivered, the upholstery class compartments were removed in 1911/12. In 1906, SIG supplied six short, only 11.63 m long cars without a toilet (BC4 23-26, B4 61-62), but now with wide windows.

Long four-axle wooden box

The first long cars to appear in 1906 were two dining cars owned by the SSG, and a third followed in 1907. They were 14.35 m long, were built by Ringhoffer, Prague-Smichov and had closed platforms.

  • Dr4 11–13, taken over by MOB in 1941, converted to C4 (from 1956 B4) 51–53 with open platforms in 1947, 48 and 51, broken off in 1966 (B4 53) and 1977, underframe B4 53 for OC 81 ″ continued to be used.

The order of a fourth dining car from Ringhoffer, Prague-Smichov in 1911 was followed by the MOB with an order for four long passenger cars, but with open platforms. SWS delivered two more cars. These six cars were the first to have toilets; Until then, they were only available in the railcars. The cars all came into operation in 1911, but were of different lengths.

  • Dr4 17 (Ringhoffer, 15.55 m), taken over by MOB in 1941, converted to B4 54 with open platforms in 1957, demolished in 1978.
  • C4 (from 1956 B4) 41–42 (Ringhoffer, 15,325 m), 1973 and 82 to CFV .
  • A4 81–82 (Ringhoffer, 14.30 m), broken off 1967–1968, underframe for B 203–204 reused.
  • AB4 73–74 (SWS, 14.20 m), converted to ABC4 in 1935 (from 1956 AB4) 94–95, broken off 1969–1971, underframe for B 205–206 reused.

In 1914, SWS again delivered three cars of the same length (15.55 m) as the fourth dining car and, like the dining car, with closed platforms.

  • C4 (from 1956 B4) 46, open platforms in 1945, discarded in 1979.
  • A4 83, redrawn to AB4 in 1930 (since 1956 A4) 101 , in use.
  • AB4 75 with bay windows, redrawn to A4 84 in 1927, to AB4 in 1931 (since 1956 A4) 102 , in use. This car was the prototype for the CIWL Pullman cars 103-106 delivered in 1931, which were sold to the RhB in 1939.

In 1924 SIG delivered four passenger cars 15,325 m in length, but again with open platforms.

  • C4 (from 1956 B4) 47, broken off in 1979.
  • A4 85, broken off in 1970, frame for Z 33 still in use.
  • ABC4 (from 1956 AB4) 91–92, 1972 and 76 canceled.

In 1929, SIG finally delivered two more passenger cars, now with a length of 16,465 m.

  • ABC4 (from 1956 AB4) 93, 1981 sold to CFV , withdrawn in 1990, drawn in Vevey
  • C4 (from 1956 B4) 48, canceled in 1979

Four-axle lighter mixed design

Together with the railcars 3001-3006, the MOB procured five light, 16.52 m long passenger cars (C4 49-50, ABC4 96-98), which were made of a mixed steel / wood construction (wooden frame with modern metal cladding) for economic reasons due to a lack of materials. were created.

Standard car

1963–1964 ten standard cars of the FFA type I were delivered, in addition there were four partially self-built cars in 1968/70, and in 1973 five standard cars of the SIG type I, this generation of cars has either been converted (13 cars), sold (two cars) or parked ( four cars). 1979–1980 nine standard cars of the much more comfortable (larger seat divider , new bogie type, warm air heating) standard car II of the SIG type came into operation, these still meet the requirements today.

and

Freight wagons

In 1901 and 1903 the MOB put four open and covered four-axle freight cars into operation, but from 1904 switched to two-axle vehicles, which were two tons lighter with the same car length. Four-axle vehicles were still purchased for the flat wagons, but these were much longer. Some of these flat cars are still in use today as company cars. For the transport of heating oil and cement, existing vehicles were initially equipped with containers, later specialized vehicles were used. It is particularly worth mentioning that the army had stationed tank wagons for aviation fuel on MOB and GFM to supply the mountain airfields. In 1948 and 1971, fifteen such OKK tank cars were put into operation on different meter -gauge railways . They were often used in block trains and were moved between the railways for this purpose. They could therefore be equipped with different coupling systems, from which the MOB still benefits today in the form of the X 49 and 50 coupling cars, which are used when RhB vehicles are rented for construction work.

Historic vehicles

Although the MOB itself does not maintain any historical vehicles, comparatively many of them have been preserved through private initiatives, especially with French museum railways and the Blonay – Chamby museum railroad. For example, the BCFe 4/4 11 motor vehicle and the BC4 22 passenger car (now the C4 45) from the early years were restored there. Both are in working order. The list of vehicles on the Blonay – Chamby museum railway provides a detailed overview .

The Rhaetian Railway owns the four saloon cars As 1141 to 1144. They were originally procured by the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits for the Golden Mountain Pullman Express . Because of the global economic crisis , this train was not a success, the Pullman Express only ran as a scheduled train for one summer season from June to September 1931. Since there was no sign of any new application, the CIWL sold the four cars to the Rhaetian Railway in 1939.
