The Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme ( German  Somme Bay Railway ) is a museum railway in northern France . The railway has been operated on a voluntary basis since 1970 and runs from Le Crotoy via Noyelles-sur-Mer and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme to Cayeux-sur-Mer from March to December .

history

Standard gauge railway

A railway line to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme was planned from 1845. In 1853, the Chemin de Fer du Nord was given permission to build a single-track line from Noyelles to Saint-Valery. This 5.6 km stretch crossed the Dien River on a 1367 m long wooden trestle bridge and was opened on June 5, 1858. It was operated as a horse-drawn railway until 1885 and only then were steam locomotives used.

The 7.5 km long meter-gauge line was built by the Société Générale de Fer Economiques (SE) from Noyelles to Le Crotoy and put into operation on July 1, 1887. A second 18 km long section was put into operation on September 6, 1887 from Noyelles to Cayeux-sur-Mer with further stations in Saint-Valery Ville and Lanchères - Pendé . There was a four-rail track between Noyelles and Saint-Valery.

Traffic volume

The railroad transported holidaymakers to the coast and was used in freight transport for the transport of flint , sugar beet and edible clams .

vehicles

The Association du Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme owns several locomotives and rail buses, as well as passenger and freight cars. They are mostly meter gauge vehicles.
