Saint-Valery-sur-Somme ( Flemish : Sint-Walarik ) is a French municipality with 2510 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement Abbeville and the Canton Abbeville-2 .
geography
Saint-Valery sur Somme is located at the mouth of the Somme or Canal de la Somme in the English Channel . Saint-Valery is connected to the Paris-Boulogne railway by a branch line and is the seat of a commercial court and several consulates. It has a port that is difficult to protect from silting up and declining traffic, a shipping school and seaside resorts. Up until the 20th century, manufacturing sites for canvas, locksmith and rope goods, fishing and brewing were worth mentioning.
The modern lower town is called La Ferté, the medieval upper town on a hill has the church of St. Martin from the 15th century and the walls of the castle Saint-Valery.
history
In the port of Saint-Valery, the Norman Duke William gathered his invading fleet and army before he translated on September 30, 1066 to conquer England .
Well-known visitors were the painter Edgar Degas and the writers Victor Hugo , Anatole France , Colette , Julien Green and Heinrich Böll .
tourism
There is a 27 kilometer long museum railway in meter gauge along the bay, the Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme ; it crosses Saint-Valery on the route from Le Crotoy to Cayeux-sur-Mer .
