geography

former train station

The community is located about 15 kilometers north of Abbeville on the river Maye . The Forêt de Crécy state forest , with 43 km² the largest contiguous and publicly accessible forest area in the Somme department, extends over the south of the municipality. The districts of Caumartin in the west, Crécy-Grange in the north and Marcheville with Le Chaufour in the southeast as well as Le Rivage and the Ferme du Morneux belong to Crécy. From 1892 to 1951 a meter-gauge railway ran from Abbeville to Dompierre-sur-Authie .

history

Settled in Gallo-Roman times, Crécy, whose name is derived from the late Latin Crisciacum, and which used to belong to the county of Ponthieu , is mainly known for the Battle of Crécy on August 26, 1346, the first major battle in the Hundred Years War between England and France. The memory of them is preserved, among other things, by the mill of Edward III. on the outskirts.

In 1358 the place was burned down in the Jacquerie , also in 1636 by Spanish troops.

In 1940 a British airfield was built, which was used by the Luftwaffe after the German occupation .

Crécy-Granges Airport

The Aérodrome de Crécy-Granges , also Aérodrome de Crécy-en-Ponthieu , was north of the place on the road (today's D12) to Ligescourt. It was created after the beginning of World War II for the British Royal Air Force (RAF). The use by the RAF was limited to a few days in May 1940 by Blenheim Mk.IV of the 18th, 53rd, 57th and 59th seasons.

After the area was occupied by the German Wehrmacht , the Luftwaffe used it as the Ligescourt airfield . The first users were in the first half of June 1940 Bf 109E of the 1st group of the Lehrgeschwader 2 (I. (J) / LG 2), the I. Group of the Jagdgeschwader 20 (I. (J) / JG 20) and the staff of the Jagdgeschwader 51 (JG 51).

During the Battle of Britain the airfield was a Bf 110C base. The II. Group of Destroyer Wing 26 (II./ZG 26) was stationed here from June to November 1940 and the II. Group of Lehrgeschwader 1 (V. (Z) / LG 1) was added between July and the beginning of October .

In the second and third quarters of 1941 Ligescourt was again the base of Bf 109E / F, between the beginning of April and the beginning of June 1941 first of the I. Group of the Jagdgeschwader 53 (I./JG 53) and then until the middle of October of the III. Jagdgeschwader 26 group (III./JG 26). In addition, the III. Jagdgeschwader 2 group (III./JG 2).

From 1942 to 1944, the airfield was then only used sporadically. After the war it was no longer used and the area was de-dedicated in 1947.
