Toponymy and History
The place name is traced back to a resident in Gallo-Roman times, Alius. Haut-Clocher refers to the tall church tower that was used as a triangulation point for the creation of the Carte de Cassini when Cassini surveyed the land in 1760 .
In 1546 the church was burned down by marauders, 130 people were killed. In the 17th century the place was plundered several times. In 1944 it was bombed; the attack was aimed at a nearby German missile launch pad.
