Rue ( Dutch Rouwe ) is a French municipality with 3101 inhabitants (1 January 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement Abbeville and is the capital of the canton of Rue .
geography
The municipality of Rue is located near the Somme Bay , the Somme estuary in the English Channel , about 25 kilometers northwest of Abbeville . The place itself is on the left bank of the river Maye .
history
Rue was founded in the 9th century by Vikings who came from Ry in Jutland . The place, although it is in the country today, had a fishing port until the 12th century. There are still families today who have a Danish name in a French version.
In 1101, the cross of Saint Esprit came into port on a boat. The port brought a fortification to the place, but after the port was silted up, this fortification was abandoned in 1668.
