Long is a northern French municipality with 621 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Somme department in the region of Hauts-de-France . The municipality is located in the Abbeville arrondissement and is part of the Communauté de communes Ponthieu-Marquenterre and des Rue .

geography

The municipality, located around 5.5 km south of Ailly-le-Haut-Clocher , is largely on the northern (right) bank of the Somme , but also includes its wide valley, interspersed with ponds, and extends in the north to the A16 autoroute and includes am On the south bank of the Somme the district of Le Câtelet on the railway line from Amiens to Abbeville .

history

Finds from the Gallic period indicate early settlement. The place was formerly called Long-en-Ponthieu. During the Hundred Years War in 1346, the English forces were repulsed by the French at the Bridge of Long.

During the Second World War the place was heavily bombed in 1944 and the bridge over the Somme was destroyed.

economy

The hydropower plant

Between 1901 and 1903 a hydropower plant with three turbines was built on a tributary of the Somme, which was in operation until 1968. It has been under protection as a Monument historique since 1984 ( Base Mérimée PA00116190).

  • The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, built between 1846 and 1851 on the site of previous buildings according to plans by the architect Hyancinthe Vimeux, one of the first neo-Gothic buildings in Picardy, preserves the portal, bell tower and spire from the previous building from the 16th and 17th centuries , with furnishings by Aimé Duthoit and Louis Duthoit, classified as Monument historique in 2006 ( Base Mérimée PA00116189).
  • The castle from 1733 with a 20 hectare park and pigeon house, registered as a monument historique in 1944 and 2003 (Base Mérimée PA00116188).
