The municipality, which is divided into the districts of Vismes-au-Mont and Vismes-au-Val, is located in the Vimeu in the headwaters of the Vimeuse river, almost entirely to the northwest of the A 28 autoroute ; to the east is the municipality of Martainneville and to the west the municipality of Frettemeule . The place is on the 1993 disused railway line from Longpré-les-Corps-Saints to Gamaches . Toponymy and History

The place name is traced back to the same Celtic word stem as the Wümme river in Lower Saxony . A cemetery from the Latène period testifies to early settlement.

In 1066 a motte (castle) was built by Theobald Fretel de Vismes; she used a natural hill surrounded by a moat. Vismes was raised to a barony in 1320. The castle was destroyed in 1372 by John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster .
