Oust-Marest is a northern French municipality with 630 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France .

geography

Oust-Marest is located on the southwestern edge of Picardy about 70 kilometers northwest of Amiens , the capital of the department, 28 kilometers southwest of Abbeville , the capital of the arrondissement, and 5.9 kilometers east of the port of Tréport on the English Channel . Neighboring municipalities of Oust-Marest are Ponts-et-Marais in the west, Méneslies in the northeast, Bouvaincourt-sur-Bresle in the southeast and Saint-Pierre-en-Val in the southwest. The municipality covers 580 hectares, the mean height is 60 meters above sea ​​level , the Mairie stands at a height of 10 meters. The Bresle flows through the municipality.

history

The remains of the Gallo-Roman village of Augusta have been found near the village . Oust-Marest was first mentioned as Augusta in the Vita Walarici (7th + 11th centuries) . The Holy Walric, abbot of Leuconay visited the legend, the town and performed there miracle , whereupon the inhabitants turn left and honor Walric, abbot of Leuconay built a church. The place name changed over time. The community was named Austa in 1123, and is listed as Aouste on the Cassini map of 1757. The inhabitants are still called Aoustois (es) today.

Oust-Marest received in 1793 in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality (as Marest ) and in 1801 the right to local self-government (as Ouste ).

Attractions

The tomb of Raoul d'Aoust, who died in 1269, is in the 12th century church of Saint-Pierre. The grave slab was classified as a Monument historique ('historical monument') in 1907. There is also a sculpture there depicting the entombment of Jesus . It dates from the 16th century and was also classified as a Monument historique in 1907 .

Economy and Infrastructure

There is a foundry and a locksmith's shop on site . Important branches of the Aoustois are the production of feed and the breeding of domestic cattle. There are controlled designations of origin (AOC) for lamb (Prés-salés de la baie de Somme) in the municipality . The lambs graze in the salty meadows of the Somme Bay . In addition, because of its proximity to Normandy, protected geographical indications (IGP) apply to pork (Porc de Normandie) and poultry (Volailles de Normandie) .

There is a European school in the municipality supported by the Comenius program .
