Lambs that still consume breast milk are known as suckling lamb (Bavaria and Austria: milk lamb ). Lambs are slaughtered for their tender meat , which is milder than that of adult animals.

In addition to the lamb , offal are used: lamb liver, lamb kidneys, lamb sweetbreads and lamb tongue. The lambskin is used as leather or for fur purposes.

In various religions , young sheep are or were often used as sacrificial animals , including in ancient Judaism before the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple , by the Samaritans and in other religions of the Middle East .

In the Christian religion , the lamb is an analogy symbol for the sacrifice through the vicarious death of Jesus Christ on the cross . This so-called Lamb of God is often taken up in Christian symbolism and art. The custom of eating an Easter lamb , which is particularly widespread in southern Europe , comes from this.
