Cayeux-sur-Mer ( Picard : Tchéyeu-su-Mér ) is a northern French municipality with 2477 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France . The municipality is located in the arrondissement of Abbeville and is part of the canton of Friville-Escarbotin .
geography
The seaside resort of Cayeux-sur-Mer is located around eleven kilometers west of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme on the Cote Picarde. In the north it extends to the Pointe du Hourdel on the Somme Bay . The place is the end point of the meter-gauge railway line of the Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme from Noyelles-sur-Mer . Cayeux includes the districts (from the north) Le Hourdel (with a seal colony), La Mollière d'Aval, Brighton, La Mollière de Terre, Le Mont Rôti, Hurt and Le Marais.
history
Cayeux is mentioned for the first time in 1005. The Saint-Pierre church was built in the 12th century. The place burned down several times in the course of its history. Cayeux had a rail connection since 1887. During the Second World War , the lighthouse was destroyed by German troops in August 1944.
