Julien Green , actually Julian Hartridge Green (born September 6, 1900 in Paris , † August 13, 1998 there ) was a French writer with US citizenship.

Life

Green was the child of Protestant American parents who moved from Georgia to Le Havre in 1895 and finally to Paris in 1898. He grew up bilingual ( French / English ) on Rue de la Pompe , where he also attended the Lycée Janson de Sailly . After his mother's early death in 1914, he converted to the Catholic Church at the age of 15 , from which he broke away. After turning to Buddhism , he revived the Catholic faith in 1939. Green took part in the First World War as a medic on the American side .

From 1919 to 1921 he studied literature at the University of Virginia and then returned to France. During the German occupation of France , he stayed again from 1940 to 1945 in the USA and supported the French Resistance from there . He died in Paris in 1998 and was buried at his own request in the parish church in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee .

An important point in his life was the early conflict between religious belief and homosexuality , which he describes in his two-volume autobiography Young Years and Youth and which he was never able to completely resolve for himself throughout his life.

Artistic creation

Julien Green created a number of novels that deal with the human fear of existence, the characters of which are often entangled in madness and crime out of passion, unfulfilled love or fear. In addition, there were dramas, stories and one of the most important diaries in world literature . It extends from 1926 to 1998, making it the most extensive published diary ever. Green's autobiography Souvenirs de jours heureux from 1942 was published - in Green's own translation from 1944 - in French, only nine years after his death in German in 2008 under the title memories of happy days .

Julien Green received several literary awards and in 1972 became the first non-French member of the Académie Française (AF). He announced his resignation in 1996; his place in the AF was refilled only after Green's death.
