Johann Caspar Füssli also Füessli (born January 3, 1706 in Zurich ; † May 6, 1782 ibid) was a Swiss painter and writer .

Life

He was trained by his father, Hans Rudolf Füssli, a battle and marine painter, then he continued his education from 1724 to 1731 in Vienna . After traveling in southern Germany and working as a portrait painter there, he moved back to Zurich in 1736. In particular, Füssli's portrait pictures , often executed using the scraping technique , but also other paintings and drawings , were often used as templates for engravings .

Between 1757 and 1764 he was a council clerk in his hometown.

Füssli was extensively literary and was in close pen friendship with the painter Angelika Kauffmann .

His sons Hans Rudolf , Johann Heinrich and Johann Kaspar (1743–1786), painter and entomologist, as well as his daughters Elisabeth and Anna Füßli (both flower painters ) come from his marriage to Elisabeth Waser .
