Gerold Meyer von Knonau (born August 5, 1843 in Zurich ; † March 16, 1931 there ) was a Swiss historian .

Gerold Meyer von Knonau was the son of Gerold Meyer von Knonau , State Archivist of Zurich , and the Emmerentiana Cleopha Meyer. The family name comes from the Knonau court , his grandfather was the statesman Ludwig Meyer von Knonau . He studied history first in Zurich with Max Büdinger and Georg von Wyss (1816–1893), from 1863 to 1866 in Bonn with Heinrich von Sybel , then in Berlin with Leopold von Ranke , Wilhelm Wattenbach and Philipp Jaffé and finally in Göttingen with Georg Waitz . In Zurich he received his doctorate in 1866 with a thesis inspired by Büdinger on the Carolingian historian Nithard . In 1867 he also completed his habilitation in Zurich. In 1870 he became an associate professor and from 1872 to 1920 he taught history at the University of Zurich . In 1896/97 he was rector . As a student, Meyer was a member of the Zofingia student union , where he made friends with the art historian Johann Rudolf Rahn . Meyer von Knonau died childless in March 1931.

Meyer von Knonau dealt with early St. Gallen historiography, with the chartular of the Rheinau monastery and with the chronicler Johann von Winterthur . With Jakob Hermann Wartmann (1835–1929) Meyer von Knonau published the St. Gall historical sources in 1870/71. On behalf of the Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , of which he was also a member, he wrote the yearbooks of the German Empire under Heinrich IV and Heinrich V. The seven-volume work was published in the context of Leopold von Ranke designed yearbooks of German history and, with 3344 printed pages and 5698 footnotes, is the most comprehensive individual service in the series. Meyer von Knonau's yearbooks are still considered to be the basic work for the history of events in the late Salier period. His view that Henry IV's trip to Canossa was, despite all the humiliation, a clever move that forced the Pope to absolution , is widely recognized in research.

Meyer von Konau wrote numerous articles for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie . In the General History Research Society of Switzerland he was archivist from 1874 to 1894 and president from 1894 to 1922. In 1893 the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings appointed him an honorary member. In 1914 he was elected a foreign member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .
