Alfstrasse
The Alfstraße is a street of Lübeck .
location
The approximately 240 meter long Alfstraße is located in the western central area of the old town island ( Marien Quartier ) and runs in an east-west direction. It begins at the Schüsselbuden , directly opposite the westwork of the Marienkirche . From the south, first the Neue Querstraße and then the Straight Querstraße join until the Alfstraße finally joins the street An der Untertrave .
history
Alfstrasse is one of the oldest streets in Lübeck. It is part of the road network that was laid out when the city was re-established in 1159 and that still provides access to the so-called founding district . It is first mentioned in a document in 1277 as Platea Adolphi , probably named after the initiator of the original city foundation in 1143, Adolf von Schauenburg .
In 1307 the distorting name Platea Alvelini is documented, in 1329 Alvestrate . In the course of the 14th century , numerous variants, some of which were strongly falsified, were found, including 1351 Platea Alvis and 1398 Platea Amelii . The variation Alffstrate was first used in the Niederstadtbuch in 1458 . A will from 1789, on the other hand, mentions Albstrate . The current name has been officially established since 1852.
Until the 20th century , Alfstrasse had a closed historical street scene with gabled houses from several centuries. During the air raid on Lübeck on March 29, 1942 , the historic buildings were completely destroyed except for a few houses at the western end. During the reconstruction in the fifties , modern functional buildings were created, and the street was also significantly widened, so that today neither the appearance nor the spatial impression of the Alfstraße correspond to its historical character.
A significant part of the buildings from the post-war years has now been torn down. This was followed by an archaeological investigation of the founding quarter, after which the affected streets are now largely redesigned.
