The RENFE series 101 was the broad gauge version (1668 mm) of the 100 series used as AVE . Since the RENFE , the Spanish state railway, originally ordered 24 AVE units, but in the later planning phase an overcapacity of multiple units was determined, RENFE decided to have six of these high-speed trains designed for the Spanish broad-gauge network. Due to the direct current operation in the Spanish broad-gauge network, both the power and the maximum speed were lower than with the standard gauge units below 25 kV.

The multiple units were used as Euromed between 1997 and 2009 on the so-called Corredor Mediterráneo - the coastal route from Barcelona via Valencia to Alicante . On March 30, 2002 a collision occurred at Torredembarra station between a regional train of the 448 series , the driver of which had ignored a stop signal and got onto the through track, and a Euromed of the 101 series, which the station with about 155 km / h. Two people lost their lives and 142 were injured. One of the power cars of the set 101 had to be rebuilt by Alstom and now looks similar to the TGV POS .

In the course of the further expansion of the Spanish high-speed network, the Euromed units were converted to standard gauge by 2010 and incorporated into the 100 series.
