The Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings (Bodensee-Geschichtsverein for short) is a regional history association that deals with the history and natural history of the Lake Constance area .

Its peculiarity is that it has been internationally oriented since its foundation in 1868 and does not define its study area along modern state and administrative boundaries. There are branches in Friedrichshafen (for Germany ), St. Gallen (for Switzerland and Liechtenstein ) and Bregenz (for Austria ); the association's activities and publications cover these four countries.

The Bodensee History Association currently has around 1200 members.

The Lake Constance area forms a unity in historical and natural history; it is one of the central cultural landscapes in Europe. In contrast, the modern Lake Constance is a border water; In the 19th century , the Grand Duchy of Baden , the kingdoms of Württemberg and Bavaria , the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and Switzerland collided here. The Tettnang medical officer Dr. In 1868, Albert Moll and like-minded people - among them Hans Freiherr von und zu Aufseß , founder of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum - founded the Bodensee-Geschichtsverein with the aim of systematically covering the history and nature of Lake Constance and its shorelines beyond modern national borders explore. In doing so they met a need of their time; therefore the association experienced public interest from the start. Early sponsors included King Karl von Württemberg , which is why Friedrichshafen is still the legal seat of the association, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary and King Ludwig II of Bavaria.

The association's activities were correspondingly ambitious, namely the establishment of a collection and library, the annual holding of demanding general meetings, the bundling of historical and natural history research in the association's publications and research funding. The first precise measurement of Lake Constance by the neighboring countries was under the direction of the association's president, Eberhard Graf Zeppelin ; Their results were published as Bodensee-Forschungen between 1893 and 1902 in the association's publications.

In the era of the two world wars, the club's activities were subject to considerable restrictions. The First World War made exchange across national borders impossible; after the war, historical research lost its high social status. Inflation devalued the association's assets. After all, it was possible for the association to initiate the excavation of the pile construction station Sipplingen by Hans Reinerth and to support it financially; their results were published in 1932 in the club's publications. The Second World War marked the deepest turning point in the club's history: The last general meeting took place in Meersburg in 1941 ; the last club publications were delivered in 1943; In 1944 the office with the archives of the association burned in an air raid on Friedrichshafen. The association's board succeeded in maintaining contact across national borders and quickly resuming association activities after the end of the war. The association's publications have been published since 1949, the general meetings have been held regularly since 1950. The number of members doubled in the post-war decades (from 649 in 1950 to 1300 in 2000).

The archives, museums and libraries of the Lake Constance area, as well as the Institute for Lake Research in Langenargen (since 1919) and the University of Konstanz (since 1965) provide important impulses for research on Lake Constance and the further work of the association . Research results developed there are regularly incorporated into the association's publications. Since 2007 the association has been awarding a science award “for outstanding scientific work that thematically deals with the exploration of nature, culture or the history of the Lake Constance area”.

Collection and library

When the association was founded, a publicly accessible collection of antiquities from the Lake Constance area and literature on Lake Constance began. In 1912, with the support of the city of Friedrichshafen and Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, it was renovated and reopened as a modern " Lake Constance Museum ". The First World War and its aftermath made further development of the museum impossible; therefore, on January 12, 1927, it became the responsibility of the city of Friedrichshafen. The museum burned when Friedrichshafen was destroyed on April 28, 1944. The club library evacuated to the Hohenems Palace was continued after the war and handed over to the city of Friedrichshafen in 1971, which maintains it as the Lake Constance library (currently with around 36,000 media). These media can be viewed on site or borrowed remotely. It can be accessed via the catalog of the Southwest German Library Association Baden-Württemberg, Saarland, Saxony.

Association publications

The organ of the association are the writings of the association for the history of Lake Constance and its surroundings , which have been published as annual volumes since 1869 (with a longer interruption from 1943 to 1948). They contain essays on all aspects of the history and natural history of the Lake Constance area, as well as an extensive review section on current scientific literature on Lake Constance. The older volumes are available as digital copies (currently up to volume 129, 2011). Between 1937 and 1955 the association published the Heimatkundliche Mitteilungen as a "popular" supplement to the "scientific" writings. The Bodensee bibliography published by the association in cooperation with the University Library of Konstanz appeared in print between 1976 and 1999 and has since been maintained by the university library as the Euregio Lake Constance database. Special volumes of the writings are produced at irregular intervals, most recently for the 150th anniversary of the association in 2018.
