The Breisgau-Geschichtsverein shop-in-country (BGV) was established in 1946 in Freiburg as a registered association by the union of 1826 established company for transportation of history, Altertums- and folklore of Freiburg, the Breisgau and neighboring landscapes by 1873 founded Breisgau-Verein Schauinsland . Both previous clubs dealt with the history of the city of Freiburg and the Breisgau .

history

University professors and senior civil servants founded the Society for History of Freiburg im Breisgau on December 27, 1826 . Despite the small number of members, they had big plans and hoped to be able to win over a number of well-known foreign historians as corresponding members. The publications of the Society for the Promotion of History in Freiburg im Breisgau , published by Herder in 1828 , had more than 600 printed pages and overstrained the company's human and financial resources. The subject area of this first and initially only publication was broad and covered antiquity through to modern times without going into particular local history. At the latest with the events of the Baden Revolution , the club's activity fell asleep. Only in 1866 was the society renewed, which now also included antiquity and folklore among its interests, with a membership that never exceeded one hundred.

In contrast, the Schauinsland Breisgau Association, founded in 1873, found greater interest among the bourgeoisie and even craftsmen from the start, as it had set itself the goal of “serving as a meeting point for friends of mountain hikes, especially in the mountains of Breisgau, as well as social entertainment to offer by collecting legends, memorabilia, etc. from the history of the Breisgau, and looking for beautiful points of the same to promote interest ”. Soon the Breisgau-Verein Schauinsland had 500 members. Up to the First World War the interest of the association developed in a more scientific direction and gradually formed a competition for the older society.

The new BGV, which was founded after the Second World War and has its headquarters in Freiburg, has sections in Bad Krozingen / Staufen, Ehaben and Emmendingen (Hachbergerland) with their own local programs.

activities

BGV's room in the historical department store

The BGV regularly organizes expertly guided excursions, visits to exhibitions and museums as well as scientific lectures. These usually take place monthly at the club's meeting place in the room in the historic department store that the old Breisgau-Verein Schauinsland brought into the association . The co-founder of the association from 1873, Fritz Geiges , painted the room, the original furnishings of which are presented in the style of late romantic and historicism .

The family tours on local history topics offered by the BGV every six months specifically address parents and their children, but also grandparents with their grandchildren.

Every year the BGV publishes the magazine of the Breisgau history association "Schau-ins-Land" as an approximately 200-page illustrated and bound annual issue with articles on the history of the region from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The book also contains stimulating and informative book reviews as well as club news. With the presentation of new findings or interim results and workshop reports of smaller but urban and regional historical research, it gives the reader an insight into the current state of research.

Publications

First edition of Schau-in's-Land 1873

The old associations published both yearbooks (the society, however, only continuously since 1869). The Breisgau association Schauinsland published the show in the country from 1873 . After the merger, these annual publications were continued in a yearbook published since 1946, the magazine of the Breisgau history association "Schau-ins-Land" . Special index volumes also make the content of the previous publications accessible.
