The Kummersdorf lock is a lock in the Storkower Canal , a section of the Dahme waterway . It is located in the district of Kummersdorf , in Storkow (Mark) .

history

The waterways in the Mark Brandenburg were already important transport routes for bulk goods by the Middle Ages at the latest. With the expansion of the Dahme waterway in the 19th century, it became necessary to build various locks at the exhibition steps. So also in the area of ​​the Kummersdorf lock. This was built between 1862 and 1865. In the first two years, 1009 barges and 84 rafts, mainly with bulk cargo of grain, wood, peat and bricks, were smuggled in each year. The waterway was used to a large extent for timber transport in the direction of Berlin. Originally it was designed for barges according to the Finow size. Shortly before the end of the Second World War, the lock was blown up in 1945. In 1966 and 1967 the lock was renovated. According to the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration, around 10,000 sports and leisure boats and passenger ships currently pass through the lock every year.

Building

The Kummersdorf lock is located at the 10.25 kilometer of the Storkow waters (SkG). After the Storkower lock it is the second lock in the Storkower Canal. The current usable chamber length is 34.25 meters and the chamber width is 5.31 meters. The drop or lift height is specified as 1.17 meters. Both heads are equipped with mortise gates .
