Peter Gorschlüter (* 1974 in Mainz ) is a German art scholar and media theorist . He was Deputy Director of the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt am Main and has been Director of the Museum Folkwang in Essen since July 1, 2018 .

Career

Peter Gorschlueter was born as the son of the Koblenz director of studies and culture department head Hans-Peter Gorschlueter (1939-1992). After studying art science and media theory at the University of Design in Karlsruhe , he worked for the Bonn Biennale '96 and '98 and works as an assistant director. In Cologne, Gorschlüter curated exhibitions of young artists in private rooms. From 1999 to 2001 he worked as an employee of the Karlsruhe gallery Meyer Riegger. In 2001 and 2002 he curated an exhibition space for Meyer Riegger and showed, among others, Zilla Leutenegger with 30 minutes before departure , Benita Liebel, Yasmin Müller and Ulf Neumann Mausetot and Lee Taylor Lee disturbs Karl’s calm .

Curatorial work

From 2002 to 2007 Peter Gorschlüter worked as a curator and research assistant at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf under Ulrike Groos . He curated exhibitions on art and music, e.g. B. on the reopening of the Kunsthalle in 2002 "Back to Concrete - The Beginnings of Punk and New Wave". In 2007 he designed the “düsseldorf sounds” festival. In the same year, together with Groos, he curated a project with art in public space in Wuppertal under the title "SIGHT WEISEN - Art on the valley axis". He also oversaw solo exhibitions and publications on Blinky Palermo and Martin Honert at the Kunsthalle .

In 2005 Gorschlüter co-founded Passenger Books , a small publisher in which books a. a. the artists David Shrigley, Simon Lewis and Wilhelm Hein appeared.

On February 1, 2008 Gorschlüter became a curator at Tate Liverpool and worked with director Christoph Grunenberg primarily on the new presentation of the collection. In this context, a collaboration developed with the artist Michael Craig-Martin , the film director Mike Figgis and the theater maker and author Tim Etchells . As an exhibition director at Tate Liverpool, he was involved in large presentations, including a. involved in Gustav Klimt and Pablo Picasso. In 2010 he was co-curator of the Liverpool Biennial .

On July 1, 2010 Gorschlüter became - as successor to Andreas Bee - curator and deputy director at the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt am Main under Susanne Gaensheimer . From September 1 to December 31, 2017, he was acting head of the museum.

Since July 1, 2018, Peter Gorschlüter has been the new director of the Museum Folkwang Essen, succeeding Tobia Bezzola . This position is initially designed for eight years.
