The State University of Design Karlsruhe (HfG) is a state art college founded in Karlsruhe in 1992 . The focus is on media art , communication design , product design , exhibition design and scenography , art studies and media philosophy with an eye on interdisciplinarity between the departments. The university has around 400 students.
history
The university was opened on April 15, 1992 as a reform university. It was founded together with the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe between 1989 and 1992 by Heinrich Klotz . This connection of teaching, research and exhibition institutions corresponds to the self-imposed artistic and educational task of relating the traditional arts to media technology and electronic manufacturing processes.
Classical forms such as painting were only represented with one professorship until 2004. By linking artistic, applied and theoretical courses of study, interdisciplinary work should be encouraged. By merging media art, art theory and design, Klotz wanted to establish an "electronic Bauhaus". Since 1997 the HfG Karlsruhe, like the ZKM, has been housed in a listed former ammunition factory.
After Klotz's death in 1999, Gunter Rambow took over the provisional management of the university. At the beginning of 2001, Peter Sloterdijk was appointed rector, which he remained until his retirement in 2015. After a transition phase under Deputy Rector Volker Albus , Siegfried Zielinski's term of office began in February 2016 . In December 2017, he said he asked the Minister for Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg to terminate his contract early. The reason he gave was that his reform ideas had not been enforceable. From April 1, 2018, Johan F. Hartle held the position of acting rector at the State University of Design in Karlsruhe. Matthias Bruhn then replaced him as acting rector before Jan Boelen was appointed rector at the beginning of the 2019/20 winter semester .
Education
The interdisciplinary framework of the early years is based on the four practical courses
- Exhibition design and scenography,
- Communication design,
- Media art and
- Product design
as well as the theory course
- Art history and media philosophy
still held today. What all courses have in common is the project work practiced from the start and constant cooperation with the neighboring ZKM. In-house workshops and studios have also been set up for the practice-oriented training of the HfG Karlsruhe.
The choice of a practical minor is compulsory for students of the theoretical subjects. The students of the practical subjects are obliged to study a theoretical subject such as art studies or media philosophy as a minor. The four practical courses of study at the HfG Karlsruhe are permeable fields of study that allow intensive references to other subjects and, depending on the research and development focus of the university professors involved, are given different emphasis. The media-theoretical analysis permeates the practical events; on the other hand, the media-theoretical and art-scientific training is concretized through a direct practical reference.
The prerequisite for admission to the course is the general or subject-specific higher education entrance qualification and the successful completion of an entrance examination.
graduation
At the HfG Karlsruhe no bachelor's / master's degree programs are offered, as project studies with content that cannot be modularized are practiced from the first semester. It also awards the internationally recognized diploma or master’s degree. Building on the master’s degree, it is also possible to obtain a doctorate (Dr. phil.) In the field of art history, media theory and philosophy. The international Bologna compatibility of the HfG degrees is guaranteed. In 2008, the Science Council certified the HfG Karlsruhe with an “excellent training concept” in its evaluation report.
