history

Popakademie Baden-Württemberg

The Pop Academy emerged from the Rock Foundation Baden-Württemberg , which was founded in 1996 by the SWR (formerly SWF ) and the state as a pilot institution for the purpose of promoting the regional music scene of Baden-Württemberg in Baden-Baden . This had mainly made a name for itself with projects such as the band pool , advanced training seminars and the pop.forum industry meeting.

In 2003, on the initiative of Stuttgart State Minister Christoph Palmer, the State of Baden-Württemberg founded the Pop Academy. The Mannheim concept of the Mayor of Culture Peter Kurz was able to prevail against the ideas from Stuttgart and Karlsruhe . Udo Dahmen , Dirk Metzger and Hubert Wandjo were entrusted with the management of the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg .

In the 2003/04 winter semester, the first year of study started the bachelor's degree in the field of popular music or music business. At that time, it was the first time in Germany that an undergraduate bachelor's degree was offered in these fields. Initially, the Popakademie moved into transition rooms in downtown Mannheim . The new Popakademie building in Mannheim's Jungbusch district was ready for occupancy in the 2004/05 winter semester .

The first structural expansion took place in 2008 with the move to Hafenstrasse 82, where a recording studio , further rehearsal rooms and the digital research laboratory SMIX.LAB have been located since then .

For the 2011/12 winter semester, the range of training courses at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg was expanded to include two master’s courses. For the new offer, the main building was extended by two floors with additional lecture rooms, rehearsal rooms, studios and offices.

Education

The Pop Academy is divided into an artistic and an economic department. Each area includes an accredited six-semester Bachelor of Arts and a four-semester Master of Arts course. In February 2015, Science Minister Theresia Bauer and Mannheim's Lord Mayor Peter Kurz announced that the Popakademie would be receiving a bachelor's degree in world music that is unique in Germany for the 2015/16 winter semester .

The degrees correspond to those of an artistic university in the state of Baden-Württemberg.

Prerequisites for admission to the bachelor’s degree in pop music design are several years of artistic experience in the context of pop music. In addition to the general higher education entrance qualification, you can also apply with an intermediate educational qualification if you take an additional test for applicants without a university entrance qualification. In addition to the general university entrance qualification, the prerequisites for admission to the Music Business bachelor's degree are initial experience in the music or creative industries. A bachelor's degree is required for the master’s courses. Interviews and, if necessary, practical exams take place prior to admission. There are no tuition fees for studying at the Popakademie, which starts every year in the winter semester.
