Frida Gold is a German band from the Bochum area . The band name comes from the song Frida by Axel Bosse . "Gold" was added later, because the band wanted a double name and gold would be associated with "valuable, warm, radiant, non-copyable and pure". The band is under contract with Warner Music and produces pop music with German , but also partly English lyrics . The songs are mainly written by the singer Alina Süggeler and the bass player Andi Weizel.
Band history
founding
The singer Alina Süggeler and the guitarist Julian Cassel have played together in a band since they were in school at the Holthausen grammar school . With the band Amnesia they won the jury award at the Hattinger Newcomer Festival. Together with drummer Thomas Holtgreve, they founded the regionally successful rock band Linarockt in 2005 (based on Süggeler's first name) and competed in the Emergenza competition . In 2007 the band changed their name from Linarockt to Frida and changed their musical style from guitar-heavy rock music to " discoised indie pop ".
After graduating from high school, Süggeler began studying flute at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen , which she broke off after two semesters in order to devote herself more to pop music. Together with the guitarist Julian Cassel, she took the pop course , a compact course in popular music at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater . In Mannheim Süggeler met Andreas Weizel, who was studying music production at the Baden-Württemberg Pop Academy . In 2008 the band was accepted into the band pool of the Popakademie in Mannheim. a. in October 2008 next to Mando Diao at Beck’s Gold Ruhrnacht in the Hattinger Blower Hall. After negotiations with record companies, the band signed a contract with Warner Music.
In 2009 they accompanied Bosse on his “Taxi” tour in 2009 , where the band Frida's first EP could be purchased. As a guest musician, Frida released the single Sommer lang with Bosse in August 2009 .
2010–2011: Breakthrough with the debut album Juwel
Frida Gold's first own single, Show Me How You Dance , was released on June 25, 2010 initially as a download . After the single was released on CD, the song made it into the German and Austrian charts in November 2010.
In 2010 the band performed live at MTV Campus Invasion and Bochum Total . In addition, from November 2010 Frida Gold completed the own Show me how you dance club tour in five German cities and was seen in the opening act for Revolverheld until the tour had to be canceled shortly before Christmas due to Alina Süggeler's vocal cord problems. In December 2010 the song Understandable was released as a download exclusively in the iTunes Store .
Frida Gold performed in February / March 2011 in support of Kylie Minogue's Aphrodite - Les Folies Tour 2011 tour . Another single with the title What shall we dream of was released on April 1st, 2011. The album Juwel was released two weeks later on April 15th, 2011. On September 23rd, 2011, our love is made of gold, a fourth single from the album Juwel was released . With this song Frida Gold took part for North Rhine-Westphalia on September 29, 2011 in the Bundesvision Song Contest 2011 in Cologne . There the band took seventh place with 76 points. With the release of the “Gold Edition” by Juwel , the last single Gold followed on December 2nd .
2012–2014: Work on the second album Love is my religion
For the second album, the band members first tinkered with song ideas in Berlin. The album was then produced in Los Angeles. The pre-release single Liebe ist mein Rebellion , which contains an element from the chorus of Galas Freed from Desire from 1996, was first introduced by the band at the Echo Awards 2013 and was able to place itself at number 4 in the German single charts. The album Love is My Religion followed on June 28, 2013 and was number 1 in the album charts.
As a second release, the band promoted the song The things have changed , for which a lyric video was released on September 19, 2013. The official video premiered on September 27, 2013 on the Ampya streaming service .
On December 13, 2013, the release of the first live album Liebe ist meine Religion Live + Akustisch , which was recorded in the Trinitatiskirche am Arrenberg in Wuppertal , followed.
From February to March 2014, Frida Gold completed her Liebe ist mein Rebellion -Tour, which covered 18 German cities. On May 22, 2014, the 6 trillion lyric video was released , for which the song was completely remixed and also featured on the program Keep Your Light Shining .
In November 2014, Frida Gold contributed a cover version of Trautes Heim from Das Dschungelbuch to the children's song CD Giraffe 3 . In March 2015, Alina Süggeler and Andi Weizel appeared for the prevented Lilly Wood & the Prick at the Echo Awards 2015 , where they played the song Prayer in C together with the Osnabrück DJ Robin Schulz .
2015–2017: Third album Alina
On July 10, 2015, a teaser video was uploaded to Facebook and YouTube , which was tagged with the hashtag # Fridagold2015 . On July 16, 2015, Frida Gold published the cover of the album of the same name on Facebook, Frida Gold , which was originally announced for October 23, 2015. What was new was that from this album era onwards only Alina Süggeler and Andreas Weizel will represent Frida Gold. Julian Cassel and Thomas Holtgreve were also no longer mentioned on the official homepage, although they are still present at concerts.
The album production took place again in Berlin and Los Angeles. After the band gathered their first ideas in English during the 2014 festival season, most of the lyrics were written in this language. The first album run Run Run was released on August 14, 2015.
After the single missed the chart entry, Frida Gold announced on October 6, 2015 that they would postpone the album release due to further studio work in order to translate the record and write new songs.
On November 8, 2015, the German broadcaster 3sat broadcast a live concert lasting just under an hour from the ZDF @ Bauhaus concert series with the original songs with English text and short interviews with Alina Süggeler and Andreas Weizel.
The next single, Wir sind zuhaus , was released on May 6, 2016 . Frida Gold had already presented the single in November 2015 in the opening act for Nena and is a German version of the song Touch The Sky presented at ZDF @ Bauhaus . On September 2, 2016, the third single was released Slowly . In the accompanying music video, Alina Süggeler shows herself completely naked. The album Alina was released on September 30, 2016 and placed 23 in the German album charts. In April 2017, Frida Gold released the music video for Back to Me . It is also the theme song for the movie Conni & Co 2 - The Secret of T-Rex .
Since 2019: fourth album awake
After a long pause and a change of record label, Polydor released acoustic versions of the new songs Wach and Vulnerable from the end of November 2019 . On December 27, 2019, in collaboration with the rapper Samy Deluxe, the release of the first single, Wieder geht was zu Ende . On May 29, 2020 the second single: Halleluja , from the album Wach , which will be released on September 25, 2020, was released.
