Reviews

Natalie Cada from Plattentests.de described love is my rebellion as a catchy title with great recognition value thanks to the "half cover version" of Freed from Desire . Cada gave the song great chances in the Eurovision Song Contest , if re-editions were not prohibited in the competition . Everything that Pop needs made it into the song: 4 minutes of “great feelings”, a “great melody”, “grandiose words”, “catchy hooklines” and a “perfect production” that even Dieter Bohlen did not succeed better would be.

Love is my rebellion reached position four in the singles charts in Germany and stayed in the top 10 for a total of five weeks and in the charts for 21 weeks. In Austria it reached its highest single in eight chart weeks with position 55 and in Switzerland in one chart week position 75.Love is my rebellion placed in the German single annual charts from 2013 on position 50.

Will Grigg's on Fire

In May 2016, Sean Kennedy, a fan of English third division champions Wigan Athletic , uploaded a video titled 'Will Grigg's on Fire' on YouTube . It contained his version of the song in which he rewrote the line of text "Freed from desire mind and senses purified" to "Will Grigg's on fire, your defense is terrified" to pay homage to the Wigan player Will Grigg and especially his scoring qualities. Grigg had become the top scorer in the third division in the 2015/16 season and thus made a significant contribution to Wigan's title win and promotion to the second division. The song first became a popular fan song, especially in England. As a thank you for his highly publicized composition, Kennedy received a season ticket for the 2016/17 season from Wigan club boss David Sharpe. After the 2016 Scottish Cup final , Hibernian Edinburgh fans sang their version of the song for Anthony Stokes , who scored two goals against Glasgow Rangers .

The song became known beyond the kingdom in the text version "Will Grigg's on Fire" through Griggs appearance as a player of the Northern Irish national team at the European Football Championship 2016 in France. Especially the loud performance of the song by the singing fans of the EM debutant Northern Ireland made the song known to a broad European audience. The fact that the team entered the knockout phase of the European Championship, combined with the exuberant jubilation of the Northern Irish fans about the unexpected success of their team, resulted in a renewed increase in popularity of the song.

In 2016, Gala said the following about this cover version in an interview with Bild :

“When the information spilled over to me that the whole of European football was singing a version of my old number, it made me proud. The song is a kind of prayer. A piece for life. When people enjoy it, it makes me happy too. I think the Northern Irish fans made a great version of it. "
