World Darts Championship venue: Alexandra Palace in London

The William Hill World Darts Championship 2017 was held from December 15, 2016 to January 2, 2017 in its 24th edition by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). The venue for the tenth time was the Alexandra Palace in London .

In the final, Michael van Gerwen secured his second world title against defending champion Gary Anderson .

mode

The tournament was played in the best of sets or first to sets mode and the double-out variant .

The first player to win three legs wins a set . The player who throws exactly 501 points first wins a leg . The last throw of a leg must be on a double square.

If the score was 2: 2 legs in a decisive final set , the two-clear-legs rule applied (except in the preliminary round) . This states that a player must be two legs ahead to win the game. This creates neither of the two players, the game at the score of 5 is: 5 in the legs by a " sudden death - Leg " decided.

Tournament course

The eight preliminary round games were played from December 16, 2016, parallel to the first round, which took place between December 15 and 22, 2016. Game mode in the preliminary round was a best of 3 sets . The winners of the preliminary round moved into the final round of the best 64 players.

The final round was played in a knockout system . Game mode in the 1st round was a best of 5 sets . The 32 winners of the 1st round moved into the 2nd round, which took place from December 23 to 28, 2016. A best of 7 sets was played there. Subsequently, on December 28th and 29th, the last 16 of the best 16 were played, which were also played in the best of 7 sets mode . The best eight players made it to the quarterfinals on December 30, 2016, in which a best of 9 sets had to be played. The two semi-finals took place on January 1, 2017. These were held in the Best of 11 Sets mode. The final of the PDC World Darts Championship 2017, which was played in the best of 13 sets , took place on January 2nd, 2017. During the tournament none of the participants achieved a nine dart finish .
