Six days before the start of the BDO World Darts Championship in 1994 , the WDC World Championship, which was broadcast by Sky Sports , started. The total prize money was £ 64,000. The founding members Mike Gregory and Chris Johns had meanwhile left the new association and returned to the BDO. They were replaced by Graeme Stoddart and Kevin Burrows , the field was also increased to a total of 24 players by seven US-Americans and Irish Tom Kirby .
A total of £ 64,000 in prize money was awarded. The world champions received £ 16,000, the finalists £ 8,000, the semi-finalists £ 5,000 and £ 3,000 respectively and the quarter-finalists £ 2,500 each. The remaining participants were each entitled to £ 1,500 for second and £ 1,250 for third in the group stage.
Tournament schedule
The participants were divided into eight groups of three players each. The first match (December 26th) of a group was played by seeded player A and unseeded B, the second match (December 27) was played by the loser from match 1 and unseeded player C. The third match (December 28th) was played between the winner of Match 1 and Player C. The group winners advanced to the quarter-finals, where the tournament continued in the cup system .
The surprise of the tournament was the unseeded US American Steve Brown , who prevailed against seeded Kevin Spiolek in the group stage and against number 2 seeded Alan Warriner in the quarter-finals . After the semi-final defeat against Phil Taylor , he finally defeated Peter Evison by a clear 5: 1 and thus finished third in the end.
