Eric John Bristow , MBE (born April 25, 1957 in Hackney , London , † April 5, 2018 in Liverpool , Merseyside ) was an English darts player .
Career
With his countless successes in important international darts competitions and a long time as the leader of the world rankings, Eric Bristow became a living legend of the sport of darts.
He got his nickname "The Crafty Cockney" from his Cockney accent . Another typical feature was his very distinctive throwing style with his little finger spread wide apart.
Although he had a reputation for being arrogant and aloof, his athletic performance was surpassed by few. He won the following tournaments, among others: World Championship (1980, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1986), World Masters (1977, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1984), World Matchplay (1985, 1988), British Open (1978, 1981, 1986), World Cup Singles (1983, 1985, 1987).
At the Swedish Open 1987, Bristow fell ill with dartitis . This resulted in him having trouble letting go of the arrow when it was dropped. Although he was able to overcome the disease over the years and meanwhile regained the top position in the world rankings in 1990, he never regained his old form.
In 1988 Eric Bristow was awarded the title “Player of the Year”. In 1989 he was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by the Queen .
Bristow retired from professional darts in 2000, but was still active in many show tournaments. He is also considered to be the discoverer and patron of Phil Taylor .
In 2012, Bristow took part in the British television show I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! part and took fourth place out of twelve participants.
Most recently he was a TV expert at SkySports England.
Bristow died of a heart attack on 5th April 2018 during the 9th day of the Premier League Darts 2018 in Liverpool . The PDC then renamed the Grand Slam of Darts Cup the Eric Bristow Trophy.
