John Lowe (born July 21, 1945 in New Tupton , Derbyshire , England ) is a retired British darts player . His nickname is "Old Stoneface".

Career

In the 1970s and 1980s, Lowe was one of England's most famous darts players. In the times when darts were becoming more and more popular in Great Britain, he did not manage to overtake his greatest competitor Eric Bristow . In the history books of darts, Lowe signed on October 13, 1984 when he achieved the first nine dart finish against Keith Deller , which was played in front of the cameras. He was awarded £ 100,000 in prize money  .

Besides Phil Taylor, Lowe is the only player who has managed to become world champion three times in three different decades. He won his titles in 1979, 1987, 1993, and in 2005 he celebrated his 30th anniversary as a professional player. In 1993 he was a founding member of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) .

Lowe competed in 28 world championships in consecutive years until he played his last match against Canadian John Verwey in 2005 and lost in the tie-breaker. All of his appearances were televised. In the meantime, Phil Taylor and Steve Beaton were able to overtake him with 29 World Cup appearances each in a row. In the following years until 2008 Lowe tried again to participate in world championships, but always failed in qualifying.

Private

John Lowe is married to his wife Karen. In 2005, an autobiography about Lowe entitled Old Stoneface was published. In May 2009 he published a book called The Art Of Dart , in which he presents his personal view of the sport of darts, both on an amateur and professional basis.
