The University of Madeira ( Portuguese : Universidade da Madeira ) is a university in Funchal on the island of Madeira ( Portugal ). It was founded on September 13, 1988 .

Some historical forerunners were housed in the rooms of the Jesuit college established in 1599. The oldest institution was the seminary, but today there is no longer a theology department. The oldest still existing faculty is the medical one (founded in 1816), which today is outsourced and self-administered, there was also an institute for geometry, which mainly served military purposes, and is now also supervised by the art history department.

Today's departments are located in several new buildings on the outskirts of the city, only the administration and some smaller departments are still housed in the Jesuit college.
