The University of the Algarve ( Portuguese : Universidade do Algarve ) is a state university and comprehensive university in Portugal with around 10,000 students (2005) and is based in the city of Faro .

The university was founded by the state in the late 1970s. In the mid-1980s, the Faro Polytechnic Institute ( Instituto Politécnico de Faro ) was incorporated into the university, and its full autonomy within the university has been retained to this day. The University of the Algarve is therefore divided into two internally independent departments that offer training courses within the framework of the Polytechnic ( technical college ) and the university. The university is consequently divided into two separate locations within Faro.
