The University of the Azores ( Portuguese Universidade dos Açores ) is the only university on the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores and the westernmost university in the country.

The university was founded in 1976 as a result of the Carnation Revolution in Ponta Delgada and has two locations in Angra do Heroísmo (Faculty of Agricultural Sciences - Departamento de Ciências Agrárias) and in Horta on the island of Ilha do Faial (Faculty of Oceanography and Ichthyology ( ichthyology ) - Departamento de Oceanografia e Pescas).

The latter was opened on January 8, 2010 and is housed in the former Hospital Walter Bensaúde in Horta, built in 1901 and renovated and rebuilt for this purpose.

The university buildings of Angra do Heroismo were rebuilt not far west of the city center on the Pico do Urze site after a former military hospital was initially used as a university facility.

The former Palais Palacete Porto Formoso from the 19th century on the campus in Ponta Delgada, which was laid out around a park, now houses the rector's office of the university. Opposite are the central library, which opened in 2003, and the Aula Magna.
