In August 1973, following a major change in the national higher education system, the government established a Polytechnic in Covilhã ( Instituto Politécnico da Covilhã ). It was the first university in town. It has grown steadily over the years and was finally elevated to a university institute in 1979. Seven years later, in 1986, the institute received full university status and was renamed Universidade da Beira Interior .

Wool Museum

The UBI took over the buildings of the former Real Fábrica de Panos (Royal Textile Factory), an important national wool manufacturer founded by Marquês de Pombal . This building served as a spinning, dyeing and weaving mill until 1885 when it was handed over to house army units.

In 1975, during the restoration work, archaeological remains of the old textile factory were discovered. The discovery became part of the national cultural heritage and the finds have been carefully salvaged and restored. Today tours of the museum are offered.
