The University of Évora ( Portuguese : Universidade de Évora ) is a state university in Évora . It has 10,496 students.

history

In 1559, the second university in Portugal was founded in Évora. This was given to the Society of Jesus by Cardinal Henry , the future King of Portugal, and Pope Paul IV . During the reign of Marquês de Pombal , the university was closed again as part of the Jesuit expulsion in 1759. The current University of Évora was reopened in 1973 as a state university.
