Guo Wenzhi

Paul Guo Wenzhi (born January 11, 1918 in Qiqihar , China ; † June 29, 2006 ibid) was bishop of the diocese of Qiqihar in the northern Chinese province of Heilongjiang .

Life

Guo was ordained a priest in 1948 and a bishop in 1989.

In 1954 the budding priest was sentenced to ten years in a labor camp as a "counterrevolutionary" by the Chinese Communist Party . After his release, he was instrumental in building up the Church that was loyal to Rome in the diocese of Qiqihar in northern China. In 1989 he was imprisoned again for a few months because he had attended a meeting of several bishops of the underground church .

In August 2000, for reasons of age, he handed over the leadership of the Diocese of Qiqihar to Wei Jingyi , who had been appointed Bishop Coadjutor in 1995 and was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in October 2005 . was ordained bishop. His successor also has experience with the Chinese government and spent 1987 to 1989 and 1990 to 1992 in labor camps.

Guo passed away after a long illness.
