Funchal [ fũˈʃaɫ ] is a city on the Portuguese island of Madeira . It is the capital of the autonomous region of Madeira and has 111,892 inhabitants (as of 2011).
Funchal means “a lot of fennel ” ( Portuguese funcho “fennel”, plus the adjective funchal “fennelig”). The city got its name because the Portuguese found an extraordinary amount of fennel there when they discovered the island.
history
João Gonçalves Zarco and his men settled in neighboring Câmara de Lobos in 1419 , as they first had to clear the area around Funchal with the cheap bay.
In 1421 the city was founded by João Gonçalves Zarco , in 1508 it was given city rights by Manuel I. In 1450 Zarco was appointed legate captain of the western half of the island, while the east with the main town of Machico fell to his companion Tristão Vaz Teixeira.
Funchal has been a bishopric since the 16th century . In the 16th century, Funchal was an important port for ships leaving Portugal and Europe for the colonies in Africa and South America, providing food and merchandise for the ships. At the time, the city was blessed with considerable wealth. The port also served as a transshipment point for sugar and wine. The coveted goods were brought to the courts of Europe. When the sugar trade was no longer profitable due to competition from the colonies in the Caribbean and Brazil and because of the increasingly depleted soil, Funchal and Madeira's economy concentrated on Madeira wine, which was extremely popular on the transcontinental routes of seafarers because of its durability. Sugar cane and wine are still grown in Madeira today.
In 1803, Funchal was almost completely wiped out by a flood. 600 people were killed. As a result, the three rivers were fixed in canals and straightened.
Nonetheless, exceptional rainfall in February 2010 resulted in major damage with numerous casualties.
From the middle of the 19th century a very elitist tourism of the European nobility developed, who enjoyed the eternal spring and tried to cure their diseases in a healthy climate. In 1891, William Reid from Scotland opened the luxury hotel Reid's Palace , which is one of the Leading Hotels of the World . From 1950, Madeira became an affordable holiday destination for other holidaymakers with the construction of mid-range hotels in the hotel zone west of Funchal.
Until 1976 Funchal was the capital of the Funchal district .
Economy and Infrastructure
The city's main industry is tourism. Funchal has been called at by passenger ships since around the twenties, but at that time they still had to anchor in roadsteads. The actual cruise tourism did not develop until after 1950. Increasingly, the port is called regularly and almost daily by cruise ships from various nations.
Funchal is the island's most important transport hub and is connected to the international air transport network with Madeira Airport , which is known for its difficult approach. The connection to the neighboring island of Porto Santo is offered by ship and plane.
education
The city is home to Madeira University , the only university on the island.

Funchal is home to the three nationally known football clubs Marítimo Funchal (Portuguese champions 1926), Nacional Funchal and União Madeira . The most famous athlete is the multiple world footballer Cristiano Ronaldo , who played for Nacional Funchal in his youth.
