Funchal – Monte cable car

The Funchal – Monte cable car is one of five cable cars on the island of Madeira .

The cable car runs from Campo Almirante Reis near the old town of Funchal to the mountain station at Largo das Babosas near the tropical garden in Monte . Construction began in 1999 and the inauguration took place on November 15, 2000. More than 50 years after the shutdown of the Funchal-Monte-Terreiro da Luta cogwheel railway , a fast local transport connection to Monte was created again.

Technical specifications

From a technical point of view, it is a monocable gondola . A difference in altitude of 560 meters is overcome over a distance of 3,200 meters. The journey time is around 15 minutes. The cable car has 39 cabins with seven seats each. Support 3 is the highest at 39 meters, the greatest distance is between supports 3 and 4 at 540 meters. 800 people can be transported in each direction per hour. During the trip there is a view of the bay of Funchal. Combined tickets with the Monte Botanical Garden cable car are available.
