Claudia Maria Melisch (* 1968 ) is a German freelance archaeologist .

Life

Claudia Maria Melisch completed a skilled worker apprenticeship as a machinist in open- cast lignite mining in Lower Lusatia , before studying Classical Archeology and Older German Language and Literature at the Humboldt University in Berlin and graduating with an MA .

In 2000/01 she led the excavations at the Ahornblatt (Gertraudenstraße) on the Spree island in Berlin-Mitte, the medieval Cölln , and from 2003 to 2005 the archaeological investigations in the eastern half of the excavated village of Horno in Niederlausitz .

From 2007 to 2009 the Berlin Senate Department carried out archaeological excavations under the direction of Melisch to re-examine the historical nucleus of Berlin on Petriplatz (Petrikirche) . The foundations of the church, some of which were still in the ground, and the foundation walls of the Cölln Latin School were exposed. Around the church foundations there were 3200 graves from the 12th century to 1717. Based on dendrochronological investigations on wood and by means of radiocarbon dating of the oldest skeletons, it was found that Berlin is significantly older than previously assumed.

The excavation of the foundations of the Assumption Church in Berlin was led by her in 2014, as were excavations in Walchum .

In addition, she is involved in international research projects, including a. involved in Pompeii and Gabii (Latium) .

Melisch is a member of the Association for the History of Berlin .
