Matthias Wemhoff (born May 9, 1964 in Münster ) is a German medieval archaeologist and director of the Museum of Prehistory and Protohistory of the State Museums in Berlin - Prussian cultural heritage and state archaeologist of the state of Berlin .

Life

Matthias Wemhoff studied archeology of the Middle Ages and modern times , medieval and church history at the universities of Bamberg and Freiburg . From 1988 to 1990 he headed the excavation work in Herford in the area of ​​the Herford Minster , the Wolderus Chapel and the town hall , where Herford Abbey had been founded 1200 years earlier. He was born in 1992 with the work Das Damenstift Herford , supervised by Heiko Steuer . The archaeological results on the history of secular and sacred buildings since the late 8th century are doing their doctorate at the University of Freiburg. In 1992 he became director of the museum in the Kaiserpfalz Paderborn and in this role he also built up the Paderborn city ​​archeology. Since 2001 he has taught as an honorary professor at the University of Paderborn . At the University of Paderborn, Wemhoff was together with Jörg Jarnut and Ernst Bremer Director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research into the Middle Ages and its aftermath . In 2003 he became the founding director of the State Museum for Monastery Culture in Dalheim .

On May 1, 2008, Wemhoff succeeded Wilfried Menghin as director of the Museum of Prehistory and Protohistory in Berlin and thus automatically became a state archaeologist in Berlin. This means that he also belongs to the Association of State Archaeologists as a representative of Berlin. Since 2010 he has also been an honorary professor at the Free University of Berlin . Since 2011, Wemhoff has also been the managing director of the German Association for Archeology and publisher of the journal Blickpunkt Aräologie . Together with Claus von Carnap-Bornheim , he has been leading the international research project Research Continuity and Continuity Research - Basic Settlement Archaeological Research on the Iron Age in the Baltic States , which is funded by the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz , since 2012 . Wemhoff is also the chairman of the National Program Advisory Board for the European Cultural Heritage Year 2018. In this context, he designed the 2018 exhibition, Moving Times. Archeology in Germany in the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, which shows the most important archaeological finds of the last 20 years in Germany from the Stone Age to the 20th century.

Wemhoff is known nationwide, especially for its exhibition work. In 1999, together with Christoph Stiegemann from the Diözesanmuseum Paderborn, he organized the exhibitions 799 - Art and Culture of the Carolingian Era and 2006 Canossa - Shaking the World . The exhibitions Germans and Russians - 1000 Years of Art, History and Culture in 2012 and The Vikings in 2014 followed in Berlin . The latter exhibition was developed in collaboration with the Danish National Museum and the British Museum . He maintains close contacts with many museums in Germany and abroad. In 2012, in the ZDF broadcast Terra X , Wemhoff presented a two-part series about famous archaeological sites in Germany. The two episodes were broadcast under the title “Germany's super excavations”. In August 2014, Wemhoff documented the development of mankind in the different parts of the world at the same time in the year zero and 1000 in the series “Zeitreise” . In 2016 further episodes (to the years 500 and 1500 ) were broadcast as a continuation of the series. This was followed by further episodes from the years 1000 BC in 2017. BC and 1800 . Wemhoff also acts as a moderator for various other television programs on archeology and regularly publishes articles on the archeology of Berlin.

Wemhoff is a member of various advisory boards and commissions, for example in the Historical Commission for Westphalia , in the Historical Commission in Berlin and in the Antiquities Commission for Westphalia . He lives in Potsdam .

In 2018 Matthias Wemhoff applied for the position of General Director of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg and was shortlisted for Christoph Martin Vogtherr , who received the post.
