Wilfried Menghin

Wilfried Menghin (born April 8, 1942 in Munich , † June 19, 2013 in Berlin ) was a German prehistorian and museum director .

Life

Wilfried Menghin was born in Munich in 1942 and grew up there. After his military service he studied from 1965 with Joachim Werner at the University of Munich , with Wilhelm Albert von Brunn at the University of Gießen and with Walter Torbrügge (1923–1994) at the University of Regensburg, Prehistory and Early History with Günter Ulbert, Provincial Roman Archeology , Ethnology and with Kurt Reindel Middle Story . In 1971 he received his doctorate in Munich and in 1986 he completed his habilitation in Regensburg for the subject of Prehistory and Early History . From 1972 to 1990 he was, most recently, chief conservator and director at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. From 1986 to 1990 he taught as a private lecturer and until 2001 as an adjunct professor at the University of Regensburg. From 1990 to April 2008 he was director and professor of the Museum for Prehistory and Protohistory of the State Museums in Berlin and State Archaeologist of Berlin. After the German reunification, the collections of the museums in East and West Berlin were brought together under his leadership and the presentation in the Neues Museum , which opened in 2009, was prepared. Beyond his retirement, he was the special representative of the President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, especially for the museum's holdings that had been lost as looted art since the end of the war , such as the Priam's treasure .

Since 1992 he has also been an honorary professor at the Free University of Berlin . Menghin was chairman of the commission for research into collections of archaeological finds and documents from north-eastern Central Europe , member of the board of the Association of State Archaeologists and a full member of the German Archaeological Institute . His main research areas were the archeology of the Bronze Age and the Merovingian Age .

Wilfried Menghin found his final resting place in the Evangelical Cemetery Paplitzer Strasse in Berlin-Lichtenrade .
