The LWL Museum in the Kaiserpfalz is located in Paderborn in the immediate vicinity of the cathedral . It presents finds from the Carolingian , Ottonian and Saxon times. It is located at the point where the foundation walls of the Palatinate Paderborn from the 8th century and a later system from the time of Henry II were found during construction work in 1964 . They are part of today's building structure and can still be seen very well in the masonry of the museum. The imperial palace of Charlemagne was found right next to today's museum in 1964 . The outline of this complex can only be seen today through the reconstructed foundation walls. The Landesmuseum is supported by the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe . The building belongs to the metropolitan chapter and is rented out to the owner of the museum free of charge.

Discussion about closure
In 2010 it was announced that the LWL Museum in the Kaiserpfalz, which has been operated by the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe since 1978, should be closed due to austerity measures. Initially, an ongoing five-year contract between the Metropolitan Chapter and the LWL should only apply until 2015. The contract covered 2.5 positions from the LWL and 10 part-time workers from the Metropolitan Chapter. The Paderborn city archeology is attached to the museum.
In November 2011 a solution was reached between the regional association and the city of Paderborn that will secure the museum until 2020.
