The Wolderus Chapel is a chapel near the cathedral church in Herford . It was built in 1735, but goes back to a previous medieval building.

history

According to tradition, the original Wolderus Chapel is said to have been the oldest church in the city and Herford Abbey . The founder of the monastery, Waltger († 825) is said to have been buried there. The chapel is documented for the year 1285.

In 1735 the old chapel was demolished and the hall building that still exists today was built. From 1807 until the inauguration of the Petrikirche in 1902, the Wolderus Chapel was the church of the Evangelical Reformed community. During this time it was extended to the west in 1852 to make room for an organ gallery.

From 1886 until the Second World War, the Wolderus Chapel was used as a place of worship for the old Catholic community, which then became part of the Münster-Bielefeld parish.

The Wolderus Chapel has served the Greek Orthodox community as the Nektarios chapel since 1962 . In 1981 it was placed under monument protection.

Architecture and equipment

Today's chapel is a simple baroque hall building . The pulpit with acanthus and bandwork as well as the altar table have been preserved from the time of construction . An epitaph from the 17th century comes from the previous building . As is usual in Orthodox churches, the walls are completely decorated with icon painting. The commissioned Greek icon painter applied his works to a kind of special wallpaper so that they can be removed at any time without damage.
