The Petrikirche

The Petrikirche is the only Evangelical Reformed church in the city of Herford . It is the first church in the city to be built as a Protestant church. It was created in the years 1901–1902. The Protestant churches of Münster , Johannis , Marien and Jakobi , which were built before, became Protestant after the Reformation .

prehistory

There has been a Reformed congregation in Herford since 1692, shaped by the Swiss reformers Ulrich Zwingli and Johannes Calvin . Initially, the Reformed church services took place in the area of the Herford women's monastery, as the abbesses at the time were fond of the Reformed creed. They made use of the right granted by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 to appoint a Reformed court preacher . In 1692, Elector Friedrich III. von Brandenburg, who later became King Friedrich I of Prussia , also granted the Reformed people in the city the right to practice their religion in public.

The community was initially small. It also included French refugees who fled France after the Edict of Nantes was repealed (1685). The first services took place in private houses, then in the Augustinerkirche on Brüderstraße. From 1800 the services were held in the Wolderus Chapel , the collegiate church of the women's monastery. It was given to the Reformed community by the last abbess. As a result of the influx from neighboring Reformed Lippe , the community grew particularly strongly around 1900, so that in 1901 the Petrikirche was built. The area of the parish extends over the city of Herford and the community of Hiddenhausen .

Remodeling and interior

Due to the lower future church tax revenue and given the shrinking parish that had circular Synod of the Church Herford decided that the Evangelical Protestant Petri church had 50 percent too much space. As a parish hall, 150 m² was sufficient instead of the existing 250 m² of usable space. The same applied to the church building: instead of 280 m², 120 m² is sufficient. Therefore, the church was rebuilt from 2007 and reopened on December 14, 2008 (3rd  Advent ). The parish hall was then sold. So today the church and the parish hall are under one roof.

An extension was built on the right side of the nave , in which the functional areas such as the entrance, stairs, cloakroom, kitchen, toilets and elevator are housed on the ground floor. In the basement there is a table and chair storage area and on the upper floor there are toilets, storage room and access to the gallery level. The room under the organ gallery , where the entrance was before the renovation, has been converted into a group room for adults up to 30 people. Another group room for children and youth groups with a size of around 60 square meters was created on the organ loft.

In the right aisle, the original stand pews . The rest of the area was furnished with seats so that larger community events (from 50 people and up) can take place in the nave. The benches that were no longer needed were given away to a parish in Poznan. The current Petrikirche offers space for around 450 people.

On the left side of the choir room is the Fallen Panel. The sacristy is now also used as a group room for groups of up to ten people. The youth cellar is still located in the basement.

organ

The old organ , which was too big for the new location in the left nave, was given to a parish in Poznan . For this purpose, a smaller organ from the Kleuker company was bought from the Dortmund St. John's Church, which had been demolished in the meantime, and set up in 2007 by Orgelbau Kreienbrink in the Petrikirche in Herford. The organ, pulpit and communion table now form an inner unit, with the communion table standing exactly in the middle of the church. The supper table and pulpit are made of oak.

The abrasive loading -Orgel 1973 has 16 registers , on two manuals and pedals are distributed. The actions are mechanical.

Building

The church is a central building in the style of the 14th century with a cross-shaped floor plan. Hugo Schneider , architect and professor at the Royal Art Academy in Kassel, was responsible for the architecture . The floor plan of the crossing measures 13 × 13 meters, the clear height from the floor to below the top of the vault is twelve meters.

In accordance with the reformed confession of the community, the windows are kept simple with the exception of the central window in the choir. It is dominated by the motifs of ears of wheat and vine leaves, symbols of bread and wine. The rosette reminds of Christ himself with the name of Christ (Christ the Alpha and Omega ) and the inscription " In this symbol you will win ." All windows were made in the Kunstanstalt Ferdinand Müller (Quedlinburg).

The church has been a listed building since 1993 .

Tower and bells

The tower is 46 meters high and has a gallery underneath the helm that is accessible on special days. The tower carries three bronze bells that form the major triad of 1 –f 1 –as 1 . The middle bell is a gift from the city of Herford. It was cast in 1690 as a council and watch bell and bears the inscription Mein Klang condinet der Rat, Mein Sturm shows fire. Let the city be commanded to you, oh great God. M. Johann Fricke cast me in 1690.

The memorial plaque for the Graf Barfuß infantry regiment is on the outside of the tower wall. This regiment was spiritually cared for by the Petri community from 1914 to 1918. The plaque was installed in 1929 by a traditional community.
