Hugo Schneider (born March 12, 1841 in Kassel ; † December 24, 1925 there ) was a German painter and architect who specialized in church buildings. Numerous buildings have been preserved and are now under monument protection.

Life

Hugo Schneider began his studies in Kassel at the Polytechnic School with Georg Gottlob Ungewitter . Immediately after completing his training as a master builder, he got a job at the Dombauhütte in Cologne and was able to work on the expansion of the Cologne Cathedral under Richard Voigtel .

The fields of this bronze door of the south portal of Cologne Cathedral were designed by Hugo Schneider.

In 1964 he moved to Friedrich von Schmidt in Vienna to deepen his knowledge. In the following year, Schneider became self-employed as an architect in Aachen , where he was involved in redesigning the interior decoration of the Aachen Cathedral and was particularly responsible for the neo-Gothic altar furnishings. From 1867 he studied with Gilbert Scott in London . Here he must also have written a doctoral thesis , because he was then awarded the academic title of Dr. guided.

From 1874 to 1879 he lived in Düsseldorf and devoted himself to painting. There he was a member of the artists' association Malkasten .

In 1879 Schneider received a professorship at the Academy in Kassel and taught construction. His predecessor in office was Otto Dehn-Rotfelser . In Aachen, Schneider was able to work at the cathedral again - he was responsible for the redesign of the bell tower in the neo-Gothic style. Schneider also received partial orders for the tower design for St. Martin's Church in Kassel and then for the Luther Church in the same place.

Between 1908 and 1912 he toured Italy.

In 1888 Hugo Schneider was one of the winners of a competition to design the Cologne cathedral portals. He designed four bronze doors on the west and south sides of Cologne Cathedral.

Parts of the estate are now in the collections of the Hessen Kassel Museum Landscape, including around 260 architectural drawings.

Buildings (selection)

According to Schneider's plans, several churches were built, including St. Simon and Judas Thaddäus in Otzenrath as well as the Luther Church (Kassel) in his hometown, St. Marien in Wiesbaden-Biebrich , the Petrikirche in Herford , the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Berlin-Tegel and the parish church of St. Georg was built in Berlin-Pankow . He also redesigned the towers of the Martinskirche in Kassel according to neo-Gothic taste. In Keyenberg he created the altar of the painful mother and in 1868 the St. Joseph's altar in the Holy Cross Church .

Other buildings and art

Hugo Schneider also created fountains , such as the lion fountain on Kassel Scheidemannplatz, which was then still called Friedrich-Wilhelms-Platz, and the Popperöder Brunnenhaus in Mühlhausen / Thuringia . The market fountain in Lübeck was built in 1873 and removed again in 1934. Schneider combined the production of works of art with the design of buildings, for example a coat of arms is described on the Internet that he designed for the door of Cologne Cathedral.

For specialist books, for example this: Rhineland's architectural monuments of the Middle Ages - A guide to the strangest medieval buildings on the Rhine and its tributaries , a work published in several parts between 1868 and 1875, Hugo Schneider made recordings and drawings.
