Holy Cross (Keyenberg)
The Holy Cross Church is the Roman Catholic branch church in the Erkelenz district of Keyenberg in the Heinsberg district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).
The building is entered in the list of architectural monuments in Erkelenz under number 178 , but is to be demolished around 2023, as it has to give way to the Garzweiler opencast mine , like the entire town of Keyenberg.
history
A church in Keyenberg was first mentioned in a document in 893. Nothing more is known of this first church building and was replaced by a Romanesque new building in the 11th century . This church was rebuilt in the first half of the 13th century. The nave was raised and given a vault . In the 15th or 16th century, a north aisle in the late Gothic style was added. A new bell tower was erected in 1562 and 1563 . In the 17th or 18th century, the church was extended by a southern, baroque aisle, so that the originally single-nave hall church now had three aisles. In 1818 the old bell tower was demolished and a new one was built in front of the nave.
In 1866 the eastern part of the old church was demolished and replaced by a new choir in the neo-Gothic style based on plans by Friedrich von Schmidt . But he had already planned a completely new building that was to be completed at a later time. In the years 1912 to 1913, the western part of the old church had to give way to a three-aisled, neo-Gothic hall church . Originally the church was to have a double tower facade, but only the south west tower was completely built.
Keyenberg has not been an independent parish since 2010. It was merged with some other former parishes to form the parish of St. Maria and Elisabeth Erkelenz. This in turn merged in 2015 with the parish of St. Lambertus Erkelenz to form the new large parish of Christkönig Erkelenz.
Furnishing
A very rich neo-Gothic interior has been preserved inside the church. Particularly noteworthy are the high altar , designed by Friedrich von Schmidt with associated side altars, the wooden and richly decorated pulpit , the relief-like Stations of the Cross and a statue of the Virgin Mary . Some windows date from 1914 and were made by WH Jansen. There are also windows by Robert Steimel in the church. The original painting from the time it was built has also been partially preserved. In addition to the neo-Gothic interior, which also includes the triumphal cross , there is also an Anna Selbdritt group from the 15th century, which is arranged in a standing position. Most of the other figures date from the first half of the 20th century.
