history

building

The Matzerath Chapel was built in 1694 in the Baroque style. Before that there was probably no church in town. The founder was Peter Gehlen, who came from Matzerath. He was Lord of the Cross in Hohenbusch Monastery . The building is built in the shape of an octagon . As is typical of the Baroque era, the roof structure consists of a curved hood and a lantern with an onion hood.

Parish affiliation

Until 1558 Matzerath was a branch of the Schwanenberg parish . However, since this became Protestant with the rule of Wickrath around 1560, the branch came to the parish of St. Lambertus Erkelenz. Since January 1, 2015, Matzerath has been part of the new large parish Christkönig Erkelenz after the parish St. Lambertus was dissolved.

Furnishing

Inside the chapel there is a baroque high altar , which was consecrated on September 25, 1696 by the Roermond Bishop Reginald Cools . In the interior there is also a figure of Joseph from 1720, a terracotta figure of Mary from 1865, a Mount of Olives group that was created for a carved altar in Antwerp around 1510, and a silver crucifixion relief that was created around 1700.
