St. Josef in Berverath

The St. Josef Chapel is the Roman Catholic church in the Berverath district of the city of Erkelenz in the Heinsberg district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

The church is entered under number 8 in the list of architectural monuments in Erkelenz .

The structure will be demolished after 2025, as it will have to give way to the Garzweiler opencast mine , like the entire village of Berverath.

history

The Bervearther Chapel was built between 1909 and 1912 as a single-nave hall church with a three-sided closed choir and roof turret in the neo-baroque style . The client was Joseph Jansen from Berverath. He had the chapel built on a plot of land that he owned. In 1912, in a letter to the parish of Keyenberg , to which the village belonged, he donated the chapel to the parish of Heilig Kreuz . It was not until 1913 that the church council accepted the gift, as the then Keyenberg pastor Römer feared that the population would then no longer come to the church in Keyenberg.

Furnishing

Inside the chapel there is a neo-baroque high altar and a communion bench made of wood. Furthermore, two colored figures can be seen in the church. They represent the Mother of God with the Infant Jesus and Saint Joseph. The benches and the floor also date from the time it was built. The windows were created by Will Völker from Lövenich in 1962. Since 2012 there has been a Way of the Cross in the chapel again. It is a reproduction of the old way of the cross, which was removed in the 1950s due to moisture damage.
