Location of Berverath in the Rhenish lignite district

Berverath is a small rural district in the eastern urban area of Erkelenz in the Heinsberg district . The village is located in the planned area of the Garzweiler open- cast lignite mine and is therefore to be relocated in the future. Berverath belonged to the municipality of Keyenberg for centuries and therefore still has close ties to this place today. Berverath is strongly characterized by agriculture. Since the village is away from the local traffic routes, it has a calm atmosphere. Under the motto “Human rights before mining rights”, residents of the Erkelenz villages Keyenberg, Kuckum, Berverath and Ober- and Unterwestrich have announced legal resistance to their expropriation by RWE.

history

The village was named after the Berveldroide farm . This was in the center of the village.

From 1466 to 1802 the St. Maria Abbey in Cologne owned a large court, a free and feudal manor, at the northern end of the village.

The village was destroyed in the Thirty Years War . In 1650 only three families lived here.

The place name

In 1170 a Berrelderot was mentioned in the founding deed of the collegiate foundation Heinsberg . If it was previously assumed that this was Berverath, this is doubted in the more recent literature.

The mention from 1377 as a Berveldroide is unequivocal . Different spellings have been handed down: 1386 Bervelderade , 1398 Bervelroide , 1536 B ervelrait and 1566 Berverath .

Berveld can be traced back to the old German personal name Beroald (Bärwald). The place is therefore a clearing of the Bärwald and belongs to the group of clearing names.

chapel

religion

The majority of the population is Roman Catholic and has belonged to the Keyenberg parish since the Middle Ages. In 1909 Joseph Jansen built a chapel on his own property and donated it to the parish. The chapel is dedicated to St. Joseph . Holy masses have been allowed to be held since May 18, 1913 .

The evangelical residents belong to the community of Wickrathberg.
