Location of Commerden in North Rhine-Westphalia

Commerden is a hamlet in the southern urban area of Erkelenz ( Heinsberg district ). It has been part of Erkelenz since 1972.

Commerden lies on the edge of the Erkelenzer Börde . The Baal Riedel landscape begins to the southwest .

In the north lies the city of Erkelenz, in the east lies Bellinghoven , in the south lies Genehen and in the west lies the hamlet Scheidt .

history

Koemerten was first mentioned in a document in 1480 . In 1563 the settlement was called Comerten . The name is derived from the Latin word commenda (= separate manor country) or condominium (= country belonging to several men).

Attractions

Chapel Commerden

The Commerden Chapel from the 19th century is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Originally it stood in the middle of the field, but today it is in the GIPCO industrial park.

The majority of the population is Catholic .

Transport links

In the west the federal highway 57 runs directly past the place. In the north there is the connection point Erkelenz Süd on the A 46 . In the east, the Aachen – Mönchengladbach railway line lies in an artificial gorge some distance away .
