During the French period from 1794 to 1814 Oberwestrich belonged to the Mairie Kuckum and from 1816 to 1935 to the mayor's office of Keyenberg. In 1935 this mayor's office was dissolved and incorporated into the Holzweiler office. On January 1, 1972, Oberwestrich came to the city of Erkelenz.

The isolated settlement of Westricher Mühle is located south of Oberwestrich and east of Berverath . With its name it is reminiscent of the Westricher windmill , a tower windmill that was built around 1800. Milling was stopped around 1930 and the mill was broken down.

religion

The majority of the population is Catholic. Oberwestrich has always been part of the Keyenberg parish . There is no chapel . Since this parish was dissolved since 2010 and merged with other former parishes to form the parish of St. Maria and Elisabeth Erkelenz, Oberwestrich is now also included.
